ATLANTA — Two subjects were arrested and at least one person was wounded in Georgia Tuesday afternoon after the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office issued an active shooter alert in an Augusta shopping mall.
Police confirmed reports of a gunman at the Augusta Mall, 144 miles east of Atlanta, at around 1:50 p.m.
“PLEASE AVOID THIS AREA – for your safety and as you could interfere with the work of the deputies!” cops warned the public on Facebook.
Roughly 20 minutes later, police said two people were in custody and the mall was being closed.
Police confirmed shortly before 3 p.m. that one person had been shot and said they were still searching for another individual.
“Deputies are having to clear store by store to look for anybody that is still inside hiding and or possibly having a medical emergency,” cops said.
The extent of the known victim’s wounds were unclear.
An ambulance and two police vehicles left the shopping center around 2 p.m., according to the Augusta Chronicle. It wasn’t immediately clear if there were casualties. Authorities haven’t responded to a request for comment.
Two people were reportedly arrested in April 2024 following a shooting inside the same mall. One of those suspects was apprehended in Connecticut. Less than three months later, gunfire at the Augusta Mall again led to the arrest of an alleged gunman, the Augusta Chronicle reported.
