Person overboard on Norwegian cruise ship off Cape Cod

BOSTON — A crew member on a cruise ship sailing off the coast of Massachusetts went overboard Saturday, according to the cruise company.
The person fell off the ship that was east of Cape Cod in the late evening, according to a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson.
After confirming that a person had gone overboard, the ship alerted that U.S. Coast Guard’s Marine Rescue Coordination Center and a “coordinated search and rescue operation” for the crew member began.
As of Sunday the Coast Guard had taken over the search and released the cruise ship, the spokesperson said, so that it could continue its voyage.
“The safety, security, and well-being of our crew is our highest priority,” Norwegian said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the crewmember’s family during this difficult time.”
The Coast Guard has not yet responded for a request to comment.
