Chris O'Donnell has claimed Arnold Schwarzenegger used a double for a lot of his scenes in Batman and Robin.

The 55-year-old actor - who played Robin in both the 1997 film and 1995's Batman Forever - never "once" got to film with the former Governor of California because Arnold was only on camera for close-up shots of his character Mr. Freeze.

During Chris' appearance on I've Never Said That Before with Tommy DiDario, the host mentioned he had always wanted to be Mr. Freeze for Halloween but had "no idea how to pull it off".

Chris replied: "Arnold didn't pull it off either.

"I was never actually on camera with Arnold. Not once.

"He had a double that was so good you couldn't tell it wasn't him. Arnold only did close-ups. That was it."

Chris thinks Batman and Robin - which saw George Clooney take over from Val Kilmer as the Caped Crusader - was a "mess" and studio Warner Bros. had rushed into the project.

He said: "Warner Brothers just got greedy on it."

He explained usually there would be a three-year gap between films but because Batman Forever been so successful, they immediately launched into the next film.

Chris said: "[They] kept throwing money at it and fixed it up...

"I think they just thought, 'Let's just go to production. We'll wing it. We'll figure it out.' "

While he didn't mind the bad reviews himself, director Joel Schumacher - who died in 2020 at the age of 80 - was "devastated".

Chris recalled: "Joel was just devastated. We were in Buenos Aires doing press and he didn't want to come out of his hotel room. . . . The reviews have come out, you've gotten word that it wasn't well received and that's just painful, having to sit there and do promotion.

"A lot of young people see the movie and they come up and tell me how much they like it, and I can't tell if they're screwing with me or they're serious."

And Chris admitted he and co-star George, who was "fun to be around", may have spent more time "screwing around" on set than they should have.

He admitted: "Maybe we just enjoyed it too much, frankly. As far as just screwing around and having fun with it."

Chris had an "amazing experience" working on the comic book films because he had always been a big fan.

He said: "I was the hugest Batman, Robin fan as a kid. I had all the toys. I watched the TV show and suddenly you're in this costume and driving the Batmobile. It was ridiculous."
