NEW YORK — NBC lifestyle host Sara Gore will be taking time away from her duties on “New York Live” and “Open House” to undergo treatment for breast cancer. She shared her diagnosis with an emotional message Thursday.

“I’m going to be stepping away for treatment and surgery,” she told “New York Live” viewers. “If I didn’t say that I was a little bit scared, I’d be lying.”

The 49-year-old TV personality fought back tears while explaining breast cancer runs in her family and that she expected to someday have to deal with it. She said that will include surgery. Gore told viewers who’ve tuned in to watch her for more than 16 years that she wanted to break the news to her supporters herself — and said she’ll be back “better than ever.”

Gore, who was raised upstate in Lake George, didn’t say where she would receive treatment. But she appears ready to put up a fight.

“I am exactly where I need to be, and I’m surrounded by incredible doctors, and people who are taking such good care of me at home, thank you,” she said.

The World Health Organization lists age, obesity, alcohol and tobacco use and family history as factors that contribute to breast cancer. According to WHO, roughly 80% of women who develop breast cancer “have no modifiable breast cancer risk factor other than gender (female) and age (over 40 years).”
