U.S. Representative John Larson has collected another high-profile endorsement for his re-election campaign.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., put his support behind the longtime congressman on Sunday. U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., also endorsed Larson.

Following the endorsement, the two lawmakers appeared together at an event on the front lawn of the West Hartford Town Hall for a community block party and food drive.

The Larson campaign said the visit highlighted the growing demand at food banks statewide, as families face difficult choices between paying bills and putting food on the table amid an ongoing federal shutdown.

“John and I have fought side by side for Connecticut – protecting our environment, preservingSocial Security, and providing quality educational opportunity for all,” Blumenthal said in a statement.

“We are fighting to ensure families have food on the table and access to affordablehealth insurance. Connecticut’s middle class is stressed and stretched. We are on their side. Connecticut’s First District needs a strong, effective leader like John Larson to advocate for them. It is why I am proud to endorse John Larson for reelection to Congress.”

Last month, Murphy endorsed Larson. Larson has won 14 consecutive elections. He is facing a potential five-way primary for Connecticut’s First Congressional District. Others vying for the seat include former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, state Rep. Jillian Gilchrest of West Hartford, Southington town council member Jack Perry and Hartford attorney Ruth Fortune.

The district covers 27 communities in the state and includes Hartford.

“Connecticut deserves leaders who fight every day to lower costs, not leaders who hold themhostage to Donald Trump’s political games,” Larson said. “I’m grateful for Senator Blumenthal’s endorsement and partnership in standing up for working families. Together, we’re confronting Trump’s attacks on Connecticut families and putting people before politics.”

“Whether it’s reversing Republican health care cuts, fighting to protect SNAP benefits from Trump’s threats to take food off the table for 360,000 Connecticut residents, or challenging his cost-raising tariffs in Congress and in court—we will never stop fighting for the people we serve,” he added. “This campaign is powered by the people who know what’s at stake, and I’mhonored to have Senator Blumenthal by my side.”

Larson, who has represented Connecticut’s First Congressional District since1999, is a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee. A formerpublic school teacher and coach who grew up in public housing in East Hartford, he is one of eightchildren.
