Second-period Kraken onslaught buries Red Wings in another home loss

DETROIT — The Red Wings were hoping to capitalize on this season-opening schedule with seven of their first eight games at Little Caesars Arena.

So far, home ice hasn't been all that kind.

The Wings lost for the third time in their first four games, 6-3, to Seattle on Friday, Oct. 9.

The Kraken scored four goals in a span of 9 minutes, 26 seconds in the second period, turning what had been a 2-1 Wings lead into a 5-2 Seattle advantage.

The Wings outshot the Kraken, 41-25.

Viktor Arvidsson (power play, third goal) scored the opening Wings goal, and William Wallinder and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard both added their first career NHL goals.

Goaltender John Gibson was pulled after Ben Meyers put Seattle ahead 5-2 at 14:05 of the second period. Gibson allowed five goals on 15 shots, before being replaced by Daniil Tarasov. At that point, too, the "sell the team" chants became more prevalent.

The boos were particularly loud after the final buzzer.

Frederick Gaudreau scored twice, and Berkly Catton, Mackie Samoskevich, Meyers and Vince Dunn (power play) had the other Seattle goals.

Gibson wasn't sharp on a couple goals, but the lack of Wings' awareness defensively contributed to the others, leaving Gibson with little chance.

Dunn closed out the scoring for the Kraken in the third period, converting on a two-man advantage for Seattle. Brandsegg-Nygard followed shortly after, jamming a loose puck in the crease for his first NHL goal that cut Seattle's lead to 6-3.

The Wings are in Montreal Saturday, the only road game in this season-opening, eight-game stretch.
